Day 19 - Monday, Nov 10, 2003
Phnom Penh - Sihanoukville
All of us congenial at breakfast. 8:30 bus to Sihanoukville cancelled, next one's at 12:30, so we went to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Big running joke - they charged Dodo and Claire each $2 extra for their cameras (on top of $3 admission) and then virtually nothing was permitted to be photographed - only outsides of buildings. Dodo took a bad stealth shot of 4 gaudy suits in a glass case because Dan said "The original Sgt. Pepper uniforms!" We couldn't photograph the Emerald Buddha, which is actually made of greenish crystal; Claire said it looked like it belonged in a Fun Meal and Dodo started calling it the Gummi Buddha. |
More silliness by the Angkor Wat model when a horde of Japanese tourists showed up and sat all around us as if we were invisible - so we laughed and discussed them as if we were. |
The three of us took motos from the Okay Guesthouse to the bus station (the drivers each carried our big suitcases/packs on their handlebars) and caught the 12:30 bus to Sihanoukville. Dodo dozed and read. |
We got a $6 taxi from the Sihanoukville bus station and met Ruth at a beachside bar. With Ruth, we all got back in the taxi and went up the hill to Sea Sun guesthouse, then we all walked back down the hill for dinner. The restaurant had only red wine and beer; after we asked about white wine, the host went to the hotel across the street and brought back two kinds of "white wine" for us to choose from, at $10 a bottle: Bacardi white rum or Stoli Vanil. So we chose the Bacardi, ordered Cokes (and Coke lights), and drank "white wine" all evening on the beach. Very pleasant! Shallow wandering conversation, giggly; then we walked up the hill to Mick and Craig's, a bar right near our guest house, after the beach place closed at 9:00, for Brass Monkeys (vodka, OJ, and rum) and fries. And a gorgeous silent lightning-show that went on for ages in the eastern sky, better than any fireworks. |
